The Truth About Bluetooth Wireless Technology

What is Bluetooth?

The short story is that Bluetooth is a technology that allows devices to communicate to each other without the use of cables. Devices that have a Bluetooth chip and receiver embedded in them are able to communicate through radio frequencies that run in the 2.45 GHz frequency to transmit information between the devices, thus eliminating the need for messy cables.

Is Bluetooth Safe?

Bluetooth is safe. It utilizes radio signals 1000 times weaker than the standard wireless technologies used by mobile phones. It is secure too, so once a connection has been made no-one can listen in and there is no interference from other Bluetooth devices. It works over distances up to 33 feet and connected units do not need to have line of sight.

Bluetooth and Cell Phones

In the mobile phone market, Bluetooth wireless technology connects devices to phones, giving the user a true hands-free experience and a greater sense of freedom. Headsets and other devices are connected to phones using a procedure called ‘pairing.’ By following a few simple steps, a phone can be paired with a device in a matter of minutes.

A Short History of Bluetooth

Bluetooth takes its name from Harald Blatand, a Danish Viking and King who was successful in uniting and controlling Denmark and Norway. He was also known as Harald I Bluetooth because of an affinity for eating teeth-staining blueberries. In 1994, Ericsson Mobile started investigating the feasibility of a low powered radio frequency that could connect cell phones and their accessories. In 1998 a special interest group was formed and the name Bluetooth was adapted in honor of the king that was able to unite the two countries. By 2004 Bluetooth technology had an installed base of 250 million devices. In 2008 Bluetooth marks its 10 year anniversary and has grown to ship nearly 2 billion products in 10 years.

Bluetooth is now preinstalled in many personal computers and mobile telephones. Some cars even have Bluetooth preinstalled in them allowing you to sync up your mobile phone.
